"pretend you're dead; it's my trick in life"...
last night i viewed the girl in the cafe, and from the first bit of dialogue, i was hooked. "it was lovely sitting directly opposite you." i have a definite penchant for well-written, dialogue-driven films, and this fulfilled that film niche for me. the two main charcters almost seem to be going in reverse, and they somehow met in the middle as they passed each other. the girl is moving on from her past while the man longs for the dreams of his. they seem to propel each other further in those directions. she makes him realise how much of life he's missed from working so hard as he informs her of the world's problems, which motivates and directs her. i've been interrupted with work and lost my train of thought, but i think that i've pretty well covered my idea on the film, i guess...

i want to ride my bicycle...
joe, mark and i rode our bikes last night. it was a grand ride. we met at nobrow, rode to the bayou for some beers (pilsner urquell) and dinner (veggie sandwiches with shallot mashers for mark and me, linguine arrabiata for joe) before venturing out to the bike collective out on 2300 south west temple. it was a good ride. we rode back to nobrow, then they went to junior's, but i figured i'd spent enough money on dinner that i shouldn't go. i hung out at nobrow til 11:30 or so, at which point i rode home with eliza and william since they live across the street from me. point is, i love riding my bike. it's fun...

words...
so as i was going to sleep last night thoughts of my blog danced in my head. i was trying to decide if i should make it about anything specific, as if daily minutiae wasn't specific enough. as i thought about it, the word pretentious popped in my head. it's obviously related to pretend and pretense. i'll break it down:
pre-: from the latin prae- used as a prefix denoting earlier, before, prior, in front of, anterior
ten: from the latin tendere meaning to stretch, extend, proceed
-tious: from the latin -tiosus used as a suffix to create an adjective denoting a condition or state
this is a word i've thought about before, so it wasn't new for me, but it did make me think that maybe this blog could be a place to put such random thoughts i have about words, their meanings and etymology. those are things i'm interested in. i really should go to graduate school for linguistics. damn...

saffron...
"i'm just mad about saffron, she's just mad about me..."
these are the words i immediately thought of upon seeing a saffron stand at yesterday's farmer's market. of course, i have been listening to a lot of donovan as of late. at the market i bought some wild greens, which i'm excited to eat as a salad. i have the idea of squeezing orange juice on them with some olive oil seeing as how last time i used lemon juice it hurt my teeth. i also bought something i've never heard of before...garlic scapes. they grow out of the top of garlic heads, and one can eat them like green beans or asparagus, so i'm excited to sautee some up with tempeh soon - when i find the time!

catcam...
have you ever wondered what cats do when they're out and about? i have, and apparently so did this guy because he fitted his cat with a cat-cam. it's pretty interesting...

blog entry one...
so i like the idea of writing a blog. hell, it'll give me something to do here at work. i have an hour and a half left in my day, so why not start it now. i've had this blog for a while now; i've just had nothing to say. sometimes i amaze myself on how well i can type without looking at the letters. i remember taking a typing class in senior high and having one hell of a time trying to type. i never really used computers back then. even when i had to write papers, they rarely had to be typed, and if they did, i'd try to get my mum to type them for me. i remember them teaching us how to figure out margins and stuff like that - all things easy to manipulate after typing a document on a computer. anyway, i started using the internet back in 1997 after visiting alex in germany. basically i just wanted to look at bands and email alex. my college had two internet computers in the library, and loading a single page would often take half an hour. now i get frustrated if a page takes longer than three seconds. anyway, i got an email account to communicate with alex and thus started my typing skills. you may have noticed that this is all coming out in a stream of consciousness... i didn't plan on writing about typing or anything at all. just once i started typing i realised how quickly i was typing without looking, so i started writing about that... yeah, well, whatever...
