"And if reality weren’t permeated by anomalies, what good is it after all?"

reality, permeated, anomalies, good...

those would be apt tags if one was to tag such a statement as if it were a video on youtube. instead they are the key words (note the separation of "key" and "word" as to differentiate from "keywords" - why? i can't legibly explain, but it makes some sort of negligible difference to me) from the title statement as originally penned by the great academic, dr. brikena ribaj, which stand out to me. personal reality is based primarily upon what our brain expects, like when one sees words which are not in a text or when one cannot find his/her keys because our brain views mostly small portions of what it expects and fills in the gaps with other expectations based on experience, knowledge of things considered to be facts and the like, which is why key words are so important. they're kinda like soundbites in that respect, only even more minute. considering these things together (what our brain allows us to witness and the anomalies that disturb that plan), this statement is quite keen. the anomalies shake up what one normally expects, and by doing so, they make life infinitely more interesting. it is when these anomalies become non-anomalies that they are absorbed into the brain as expectations, thus rendering them less interesting or less significant in the standard reality...

once...

after many different fallen-through plans to see it, i finally saw once monday evening. i'd say that pretty much every musician should see the film. i was blown away. it's certainly one of the best films i've ever seen. if you leave the film not in love with the nameless characters and the music of the frames, then i apologise for our apparent difference in taste, but i honestly doubt that will happen...

the professor and the madman...

so i finally started to read the professor and the madman yesterday. i got about halfway through the book last night before retiring for the evening. it's quite the interesting story. i'll give you the basic story... the oxford english dictionary was compiled over the course of seventy years with the help of many submitters/contributors. one of those contributors was a united states civil war veteran, doctor william chester minor. minor went to england in an attempt to cure his insanity, and ended up killing a man with his service revolver one evening. the court found him innocent by reason of insanity and sent him to broadmoor mental asylum in rural england. it was during his residence there that he sent in thousands of defining entries still included in the OED. fascinating, eh?

"pretend you're dead; it's my trick in life"...

last night i viewed the girl in the cafe, and from the first bit of dialogue, i was hooked. "it was lovely sitting directly opposite you." i have a definite penchant for well-written, dialogue-driven films, and this fulfilled that film niche for me. the two main charcters almost seem to be going in reverse, and they somehow met in the middle as they passed each other. the girl is moving on from her past while the man longs for the dreams of his. they seem to propel each other further in those directions. she makes him realise how much of life he's missed from working so hard as he informs her of the world's problems, which motivates and directs her. i've been interrupted with work and lost my train of thought, but i think that i've pretty well covered my idea on the film, i guess...

i want to ride my bicycle...

joe, mark and i rode our bikes last night. it was a grand ride. we met at nobrow, rode to the bayou for some beers (pilsner urquell) and dinner (veggie sandwiches with shallot mashers for mark and me, linguine arrabiata for joe) before venturing out to the bike collective out on 2300 south west temple. it was a good ride. we rode back to nobrow, then they went to junior's, but i figured i'd spent enough money on dinner that i shouldn't go. i hung out at nobrow til 11:30 or so, at which point i rode home with eliza and william since they live across the street from me. point is, i love riding my bike. it's fun...

words...

so as i was going to sleep last night thoughts of my blog danced in my head. i was trying to decide if i should make it about anything specific, as if daily minutiae wasn't specific enough. as i thought about it, the word pretentious popped in my head. it's obviously related to pretend and pretense. i'll break it down:

pre-: from the latin prae- used as a prefix denoting earlier, before, prior, in front of, anterior

ten: from the latin tendere meaning to stretch, extend, proceed

-tious: from the latin -tiosus used as a suffix to create an adjective denoting a condition or state

this is a word i've thought about before, so it wasn't new for me, but it did make me think that maybe this blog could be a place to put such random thoughts i have about words, their meanings and etymology. those are things i'm interested in. i really should go to graduate school for linguistics. damn...
